More iPhone rumours, this time about the features of iPhone 2.0. According to GPS Magazine, Apple will be releasing a new 3G version of the iPhone in 2008 that will also incorporate GPS Sat-Nav.
The current iPhone already has Google Maps built-into it, but has no GPS module, so you have to manually type in where you are and where you want to go. You also can't use the iPhone as a Sat-Nav, as it doesn't actually know where it is unless you tell it.
As such, the iPhone is no match for Nokia's Sat-Nav phones, such as the Nokia N95, 6110 and E90 communicator. For the next-gen iPhone, though, Apple are reportedly in discussion with Global Locate, which provides low power GPS modules, for the GPS chipset.
With Google maps and a fully functional GPS unit, the iPhone really will start to make sense as a serious smartphone. Hmmm, 3G, GPS...all it needs then is a decent camera and maybe it will be able to take on Nokia. Then again, by the time it comes out, Nokia will probably have released a nuclear fusion-powered phone!
